Mobile World Congress 2023: A Sneak Peek into the Future of Mobile Technology

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is the largest mobile technology event in the world, held annually in Barcelona, Spain. The event provides a platform for companies to showcase their latest products, technologies, and services.

Below are few key highlights of event - WC'23

Chinese Smartphone Maker has launched the first generation Zero-power Tag

Oppo has showcased its zero-power tag  at MWC'2 among the other Oppo products. Zero-power tag is first of its kind from Oppo as part of their vision to develop IoT products. The device, which looks like a visitor's ID card, functions in a manner that is very similar to Apple's AirTag or a Tile tracker, but does not require a battery to power itself.

This comprises RF signal harvesting, backscattering, and low-power computing. It generates power by using ambient radiofrequency energy from the surroundings to run itself. The sources of this RF energy include cellphone base stations, TV towers, FM radio towers, and other structures. Wi-Fi access points may potentially be used to power similar devices.

Another Chinese Maker has unveiled it first wireless AR Glass

The newest augmented reality (AR) wearable technology from Xiaomi, the Wireless AR Glass Discovery Edition, was introduced at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2023 in Barcelona. These augmented reality glasses, which run on Qualcomm's most recent XR platforms, are a prototype of the company's most recent advancement in augmented reality and virtual reality technologies. It has equipped with "retina-level" display that is made to wirelessly connect to a smartphone and is advertised to have latency as low as 50ms.

Two Micro-OLED screens with free-form light-guiding prisms and a maximum brightness of 1,200 nits are included in the Xiaomi AR glasses. According to Xiaomi, the final picture is mirrored by three surfaces within the prisms and then projected in front of the wearer's eyes. Xiaomi also notes that the glasses are fitted with electrochromic lenses that may display a "blackout mode" for VR-like experiences.

Cameras that Work Like Human Eye

Earlier this week, Prophesee a Paris-based firm that creates camera chips with inspiration from how the human eye functions revealed that it has finalised a multi-year agreement with Qualcomm for integration into the product of the smartphone technology giant at the MWC 2023 event in Barcelona.

The cutting-edge chips, which are inspired by the human eye, simply analyse changes to the scene, such as movement or light, rather than the full image frame. Because of this unique characteristic, Prophesee's camera chips are quicker and consume less CPU power, making them appropriate for usage on smartphones.

iSIM (Integrated SIM) an eSIM Alternative

Qualcomm Partners With Thales to Unveil iSIM for Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC as eSIM Alternative. The iSIM solution allows devices to connect to a cellular network without a regular SIM card or even an embedded SIM (eSIM), the iSIM is GSMA Remote SIM Provisioning compatible, and device manufacturers believe that it will boost productivity, relieve space restrictions, and save costs.

What's New with Google

Google Introduces New Features for Android and Wear OS, Brings Google Keep Widget, New Shortcuts. The new features have brought improvements to connectivity as well as accessibility for supported devices. The features include a Google Keep single note widget on home screen, Wear OS' new shortcuts to create notes and to-do lists from the watch face, audio enhancements, and new emoji packs.

The new Google Keep note widget on Home Screen will display reminders, background colors as well as images added to notes. It will also be synced via a smartwatch. These new features for Wear OS, will let users create notes or to-do lists with just one tap on their watch face. Users can also be able to annotate PDFs in the Google Drive app for Android by using a Stylus or tapping on the screen.

Alternative for Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) Batteries

Honor announced industry's first silicon-carbon battery. It is a big deal in the smartphone space as few companies have sought to switch over to something new. Honor CEO, George Zhao, in his short briefing touched upon the features about Honor's new battery technology, and also explained that a smartphone with this type of battery would be coming soon, hinting that it's just announced Honor Magic 5 Pro smartphone also takes advantage of the same technology.

Zhao at the launch explained that Honor's silicon-carbon battery can help improve the battery's energy density by 12.8 percent and can help when it comes to saving space and also improving a smartphone's battery capacity. Where as regular graphite batteries underperform when the battery voltage drops below 3.5V. On the flipside, Honor's silicon-carbon battery thanks to its Low Voltage Aggregation Technology and its higher capacity can last a lot longer.

New Foldable Smartphones to Hit the Market

As the smartphone market share of foldable segment is growing exponentially. Majority of the makers has unveiled their foldable concept phones in MWC'23.

OnePlus

OnePlus has announced it will launch its first foldable smartphone in the third quarter of this year and claims that upcoming foldable handset is said to offer a fast and smooth experience. It will take on the likes of Samsung, Oppo, and Motorola in the foldable space.

OnePlus has already showcased glimpses of its upcoming foldable smartphone at its Cloud 11 event. Kinder Liu (President & COO) in a press statement said that the foldable phone will be a flagship phone that won't compromise on its folding form, including industrial design and mechanical technology. According to a report, OnePlus' first foldable phone will feature a 2K display, similar to the display of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4.

Motorola

Motorola Confirms New Razr Foldable Smartphone Edition in 2023 and likely to have an under-screen front camera. Company also claimed and stated that hinge and applications on the handset would be improved.

Tecno

Tecno Phantom V Fold company's first foldable smartphone with MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus SoC unveiled with five cameras including two front and three rear cameras. Phanton V Fold is said to be the first left-right foldable smartphone in the world which has an AnTuTu test score of more than 1.08 million.

Phantom V Fold device is an ultra-clear 5-lens camera system, which includes a 50-megapixel primary lens with a super light-sensitive custom sensor, and two additional rear lenses, the report added. The newly unveiled phone is said to feature two front camera lenses for selfies and video calling.

Rollable phone from Motorola

Featuring a 15:9 aspect ratio that can supposedly expand to 6.5 inches (in a 22:9 aspect ratio) when necessary, the Motorola Rizr Concept With Rollable 6.5-Inch POLED Display was displayed at MWC'23.

When rolled up, the display's inactive portion is said to wrap around the bottom and slip up over the back panel. To show notifications, the rolled-up display on the back of the device is supposed to function as a secondary display when it is turned over, exactly like the outer display of a standard foldable.

The battery is rumoured to have have a restricted 3,000mAh capacity since it is believed that the rollable display is powered by a tiny motor that takes up room within the phone. Even with the clear protective case on, the phone is fairly thick and weights 210g.

New Concept Phone by OnePlus

OnePlus 11 Concept Phone unveiled at MWC 2023, features an Active Cryoflux cooling mechanism that can reduce temperatures by up to 2.1 degrees Celsius. This concept smartphone from OnePlus is equipped with a miniaturised active liquid cooling system that is built into the smartphone's rear panel.

In the heart of the phone, there are reportedly industrial-grade ceramic piezoelectric micropumps for the new Active Cryoflux system, while blue pipes run around the back panel and are visible through the back glass.

According to OnePlus, this cooling technology may increase gaming framerates by up to 4 frames per second (fps). According to the business, charging periods may be shortened by "30 to 45 seconds" by lowering temperatures by up to 1.6 degrees Celsius while the device is being charged.
